First of all: I'm not a CS:GO player. Never was - never will. But I am familiar with ZE (ZombieEscape). So this post is mostly on ZE.
Sorry in advance. There is quite a bit to read. But it was hard to stop once I started to write.


Ok, let's do this...

ZE is a great mod to play BUT it relies on a great and solid community. I'll make a list on things I think you should know and consider. I'll try to make it short yet clear.



  • ZE isn't easy to get into. To be sucessful at ZE you have to know the maps (weapons to use, route(s), trigger points, holding points, holding duration, boss fights and - maybe the hardest and most fun of all - item uses). All combined: You need a strategy. And there are a lot of maps...
  • Just a minor thing: Some maps are quite large - even a few hundred MBs
  • ZE maps are unlike most maps you might have ever played: ZW maps are a whole new thing. Most maps have scripted props (e.g. vehicles), scripted events (e.g. walls that stalls you, disappear if you have triggered something/done something), scripted bosses (not a bot, more of a mobile part of the map that reacts to players' movements), stages (like maps within maps), items (spawning props or triggering enviromental effects), ...
  • ZE maps - or stages - arent done within 5 min. Sometimes it takes you 30 min or more. And if you fail, you start again and retry.
  • If you do not know the map, you're not productive or get infected. Human "team" with bad players is doomed to fail.
  • Humans fail again and again -> players get frustrated -> players leave -----> DEAD SERVER
  • For ZE to take place you need humans AND zombies. Which means that at the beginning of the round a few players are chosen to be zombies randomly. You get knifed - you get infected - you are a zombie. And for the duration of the round you stay zombie. Even if the round lasts for 30 min. There are quite a few people who - understandably - don't want to be zombie. But you have to deal with it.
  • This game relies on zombies. If infected people leave the game or go AFK/SPEC the remaining zombies don't have any chance and tend to do the same thing. RESULT: Both human and zombie players are bored and/or leave the server.
  • Obaying the server rules is essential. Breaking the rules ruins the fun for others. So you need admins on to keep the people happy and server populated.
  • No admin -> no rules -> trollers and glitchers -> no fun -> people leave   -----> DEAD SERVER
  • No people on the server -> no fun -> people leave    -----> DEAD SERVER



Those are the main points that came up in my mind. Most are important, a few are crucial. All in all keeping a ZE server alive is incredibly hard. As told before you need a solid community to run a ZE server - you don't get one by running it.
Quite a few ZE communities are struggling with keeping their servers alive.


And quite an important point I bet: Financial aspect !! You need a high count of players to have fun with ZE. Therefore you need a lot of server slots. With a lot of players online and ZE map running you'll need a really good machine handling the server. And as seen before: This can cost a bit.



Let's get to the point:

  • Only a small fraction of players play ZM - even less ZE.
  • Player count is crucial at any point of the game. Therefore you need a solid community.
  • To keep the server populated and players happy you need admin presence almost 24/7.
  • Running the needed machine costs a bit... so... Ka-Ching.

Fact is: I dont think this is a good idea AT ALL.




You should better provide something that let's you do things together. And by do I mean make/create.
